Thomas Chippendale (1718 - 1779) was a cabinetmaker and furniture designer in the English Georgian style, rococo and neoclassical English. He moved to London in 1749 where in 1754 he became the first cabinet-maker to publish a book of his work: The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director.

Three editions were published, the first in 1754, followed by a reissue in 1755 and the last edition, revised and enlarged in 1762, at a time when the drawings illustrated Chippendale began to show signs of Neoclassicism. Chippendale was more than just a furniture designer.

True interior designer who advised on trinkets or the color of the room, he worked in partnership initially with the upholsterer James Rannie and later with the assistant of the latter, Thomas Haig. Artistic control of luxurious furniture workshops from St. Martin's Lane was also in his hands.
